Grinding noise

For the past several days I've been hearing some griding noise from behind the dash, not in the middle, but on the driver side. The problem is that it's totally random and I haven't been able to find in which conditions it happens. What could it be and is it something I can fix myself?

Could be a blend door actuator starting to go out, which is pretty common and can make a grinding or clicking noise behind the dash. It's usually tied to the HVAC system adjusting airflow or temp, even when the car's off. Does the noise ever happen when you change climate settings or start the car cold?
